Creating Your College Bucket List

By Karolyn Castaldo on April 3, 2012

College is basically the last chance you have in life to do some incredibly stupid things that could be perceived as trashy, unprofessional, or just plain dumb in the real world. For this reason, it’s necessary to create a bucket list that will get the crazy out of your system before you have to get a real job, start a family, and start raising kids of your own, who will do the same absolutely insane things that you did while in college.

Depending on where you go to school, there could be plenty of cultural things that happen on and around your campus that are must-haves on your college bucket list. For example, it’s a goal of many at DU to go to at least one concert at the Red Rocks Amphitheater. Generally, if you go to school out of state, you’ll decide you need to do things that make you a true member of that state, at least for the four or so years that you’re there.

However, there are many bucket list goals that are general for all colleges. It’s common knowledge that as a senior, it is your duty to pull a prank that will be remembered, but try not to get caught. Take a road trip with your friends. It may make you want to kill each other before the end, but you’ll only remember the good times you had for years to come. If you can afford it, study abroad. You may never get the chance again to travel to certain parts of the world, so why not make it part of your higher education experience. Other than that, there are the usual piercings, tattoos, and drunken escapades that everyone talks about, so go for it if that’s your kind of thing.

Your goals don’t have to be completely dumb either. Put things on your bucket list that will motivate you. Try getting on the Dean’s List for at least one semester, or taking one more class than you usually do. Take fitness classes or simply go to the gym as much as possible. Read books for fun outside of your classes and join clubs that stimulate your intellect. You can even tack on a minor that, while it might not necessarily be useful in life, is an interesting topic to study. Oh, and the last item on your list should probably involve making it to Graduation.

Other than that, have fun and make your bucket list personal to you. While there will always be those things that you can and probably should only experiment with in college (sexuality, vegetarianism, protesting, and maybe even drugs to name a few) don’t just do it because you’re in college and you’re supposed to. If you want to start a band, start one. If you want to become a legend on campus, do it. You are the master of your own destiny and you should not look back at college as a time where you didn’t do everything that you wanted to. There’s plenty of time in life to be serious and hard working: college is the time to prepare for that, while still living it up.
